The 2000s so far have been extremely violent. In September 2001 the World Trade Center in New York was destroyed and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., attacked by Islamist terrorists. The United States-led invasion of Afghanistan commenced later that fall, and in 2003, the United States led an invasion of Iraq that toppled the government of Saddam Hussein.
